11 LAMATA officials arraigned for stealing diesel

Eleven officials of the Lagos State Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) were yesterday arraigned before a Lagos Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Yaba for allegedly stealing several liters of Diesel belonging to the authority.
The Prosecution team led by the State Attorney-General, Mr. Olasupo Sashore (SAN) accused the officials who were BRT drivers of conspiracy and stealing of Lagos State Bus Management Property.
The defendants were Sunday Olanisan, Agidi David, Victor Erahagbi, Mukaila Badiru, Isaac Okpotomo, Rufus Opelomo, Umokoro Happy, Aiyemere Lucky, Franklin Orise, Momoh Lucky and Lukman Balogun. They all pleaded not guilty to the 11-count charge preferred against them.
The 11 count charge partly read that - “you Sunday Olanisan, Agidi David and Victor Erahagbi on or about August 15,2008 at Asiwaju, Alaba market in Lagos conspired together to steal diesel fuel property of LAGBUS Asset Management. They further stated that the defendants stole about 425 liters on several occasions in different locations especially at Alaba market, Oladipo bus stop Oshodi, Costain Area Surulere, Mile 2, Ijora and Ile Zik bus stop Ikeja.
The prosecution said the offence was contrary to Sections 516, 390 (6) and 427 of the Criminal Code Cap C17 vol.2 Laws of Lagos State Nigeria, 2003. The defence team led by Chief Giwa Amu urged the court to grant bail to the defendants on liberal terms since they were arraigned with amended charges.
He said that the initial charge preferred against them indicated that they allegedly stole 150,000 liters which was valued at N25.5 million. He noted that the defendant were arrested in September 3, 2008 and have been in police custody more than the time stipulated by the law. Magistrate A. Olatokun however, granted each of them bail in the sum of N500,000.00 with two sureties.
