Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has called on all Nigerians to rally support and pray for Samuel Peter, the World Heavy Weight Champion, as he takes on Ukrain’s Vitali Klitscho on October 11.

The governor , who is leading a delegation from his state to Berlin , Germany for the long awaited fight, said after a strenuous training by the Nigerian Nightmare, the only other thing he needs to win the fight is God’s backing.
Praising the indomitable spirit in the Nigerian, Akpabio assured all Nigerians that the nation would again be made proud as Samuel Peter is bound to tap from his training as well as the innate nature of resilience, perseverance and determination.
“ I believe that our son, Samuel Peter would do us proud again. Remember that he is the first black man from Africa to win the World Heavy Weight Championship belt, so he needs our support.. That is why we in Akwa Ibom state did not spare anything in giving him the requisite training to prepare him for the fight. We also ensure that he had the conducive environment to train”, the governor was quoted as saying..
In a release issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Usoro I. Usoro, Governor Akpabio said though Vitali may have been rusty on account of his inactivity in the last four years, Peter still needs to give his best, in order not to give room for surprises.
Akpabio has been a strong pillar behind Samuel Peter, culminating in the latter winning the WBC crown. In fact, the governor’s physical presence by the ringside in the United States was what boosted Peter’s energy for him to become the interim World Champion, last year.
Ever since, the governor has spared nothing to ensure that Peter retains the title. He sponsored the World Champion to about five countries for training before the actual championship fight with Jameel McCline. Recently, the Governor also set up a world class training and fitness centre at Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo for Peter’s training.
“Right now, I believe he is fit and ready to go. I have discussed with him constantly and he has assured me that he would do us proud. He said Vitali would not last up to the 9th round and I think he should even reduce it to the 6th round. Samuel knows the burden on his shoulder; he knows that he is not only representing Nigeria or Akwa Ibom State , he is representing Africa . That is why he needs our prayer to stay focused and energised in the ring on October 11, 2008”, Akpabio added.
Last time Governor Akpabio was by the ringside, he reportedly gingered Peter to victory by shouting at him in their dialect to rise from three falls to win the fight.
This time, he has promised to repeat a similar support. “I would be by the ringside in Berlin ; when you see Don King by Samuel Peter’s ringside, the next person would be me. Samuel Peter needs all the support we can give him and he has told me that my presence means a lot to him, whenever he is fighting”.
Samuel Peter has also assured Nigerians that he would return with his belt and pride intact, after the encounter with Vitali, one of the Klitschko brothers gunning for his neck.
Recently, Peter was said to have won the verbal war against the duo, who probably thought they could intimidate him by their feeble arguments. He even accused the Klitschkos of fighting without intelligence. “ They fight like they’re robots…They both fight like robots. I’m not a robot. I am a skilled fighter and puncher”, he said.
Peter warned Vitali to watch for his (Peter’s) unique style of fight, insisting that nobody in the world fights like he does.
“ I don’t want to know who he is sparring. I’m Samuel Peter…Nobody can survive my style. You said you have a sparring fighter like Samuel Peter, nobody fights like me. When I punch you, you’ll remember you made a mistake”, he added.
