Osogbo—Osun State chapter of the Action Congress (AC), has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to put machinery in motion to stop the continued deduction of funds of the 30 local government councils and the Modakeke Area office by the state government.
The party, in a statement signed by the Director of Media of Rauf Aregbesola Campaign Organisation, Mr. Gbenga Fayemiwo, said despite petitions sent to the commission, illegal deductions of council’s funds still continue unabated in the state.
It further expressed surprise that the government paid the second instalment of the controversial constituency development fund into the private accounts of members of the State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The party alleged that between 45 and 50 per cent of the revenue accruing to the local governments in the state are being deducted by the government under through the state joint accounts.
While lamenting that the development has rendered the local governments in the state ineffective, the AC added: “Many of the 30 local governments have now become glorified paymasters that just collect remnants from the state joint accounts and hand it over to their workers. The situation has become more deplorable to the extent that some of the councils have not been able to fund the running grant accounts of their departments to operate efficiently. The greatest victim of this infamy is the grassroots dwellers who are the closest to the third tier of administration””.
While noting that the defence of the council chairmen on the petition written was lie and a deliberate attempt to protect the state government, the party accused the State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola of assuming the status of a car dealer ‘‘who buys automobiles and other consumables for Local Governments and then deducts the cost from the source’’.
““Council Funds have been diverted to projects that have no relevance with the development aspiration of the people of Osun State. It is surprising that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has not been able to act on the petition earlier sent to it.
““Are we being told that once you are a member of the ruling party, you are not required to obey common laws and ethics? We have vouched for her integrity and neutrality while her record of service is a testimony to the fact that she is a patriot who will not allow any criminal use past acquaintanceship to rubbish her career. That was why we are surprised that the EFCC has not done anything to halt the illegal deduction of Council funds in Osun State””, the party said.
The AC therefore called on EFCC to set machinery in motion for immediate action on the situation in Osun State Local Governments adding that ““this will clear the air that the anti-graft commission is not protecting financial criminals from facing justice””.
