Awka—Tolls may be collected from motorists by the Anambra State Government as the State Road Maintenance Agency takes off, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Works, Mr Emmanuel Chukwuma, has hinted.
The bill for the establishment of the Anambra State Road Maintenance Agency was recently signed into law by Gov. Peter Obi.
Explaining the aims of the Act, Chukwuma in an interview, said that it would take care of the critical task of maintaining roads.
He said that it was only through the maintenance of roads that their lifespan would be maintained.
“Beside ensuring the efficient and effective maintenance of roads, the agency would be involved in concession, by agreeing with private companies to construct roads and manage them for an agreed number of years,’’ he said. “This implies that tolls will be charged,’’ he added.
While signing the bill, Obi promised that the state would now witness massive maintenance of existing roads.
He said that with the signing of the bill, the state would now receive its share of 5 per cent deductible from pump price of fuel dedicated to road maintenance.
He assured that he would also pursue the arrears which the state could not get in the past because of the non-existence of a road maintenance agency.
