INDUSTRIAL crisis is looming in the Apapa section of the nation’s ports following last week's sack of several dockworkers by the management of Apapa Bulk Terminal (ABT) Limited, a subsidiary of Floor Mills Plc, without reasons.
Already, the leadership of the Dockworkers branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to cripple business activities in the area next week if the sacked workers are not recalled. However, the sacked workers alleged that they were sacked because the management does not want to honour the collective agreement on the minimum standards for Dock Labour Industry reached between the Association of Private Operators of Seaport Terminals and MWUN under the auspices of Ministry of Transport and other related agencies in the ports. The sacked workers said the agreement, which was entered into on the 20th of May, 2008, provided for the workers to choose between being paid under tonnage or monthly payment and that they (workers) chose the tonnage payment which the management allegedly refused. |
