Former Green Eagles captain, Chief Segun Odegbami has advised the chief coach of the Super Eagles, Shaibu Amodu to give new players a chance to prove their worth at the last World Cup/Nations Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone in Abuja.
Amodu
Chief Odegbami said the Sierra Leone match should be rounded off with a particular platform to start to look for the particular team that would actually play at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The ex IICC Shooting Stars play-maker stressed that the ambition of Nigeria to win the World Cup would not be fulfilled, if the coaching crew refuses to inject some of the Under-23 players who are ripe to take over from the ageing ones.
“Those that have been playing now, should we take them to the World Cup in 2010 in South Africa? I don’t think that our ambition to win the World Cup would be fulfilled if we do.
“We have seen the best of them, we saw their dismal performance at the last Nations Cup in Ghana, and that they are winning some matches in the Africa Nations Cup qualifier should not be a point at what we can do in the 2010 World Cup.
Whereas we have seen younger players that have achieved tremendously up to the highest level at their age range and they should start to be given an opportunity to play at the higher level and to showcase their talents and to continue to build the team work that will be required to win the World Cup should we truly want to win it.
“What I am saying is that we should give Under-23 players an opportunity of playing at the Super Eagles level, so that we can truly start to measure their capacity to win the World Cup.
They have mental capacity to do it, they got to the final of two of the biggest championships at their age levels and they will have the mental capacity to get to the final of the Mundial.
“I am not calling for total overhauling of the team (Super Eagles). I am in support of what Amodu has done. He needs to inject some of them (U-23) into the team and start to measure their capacity and hopefully when they get to the World Cup proper, we will have enough of those young ones that already believe they can do it.It is not about the individual players now, it is about the team, we need a team to win the World Cup” , said Odegbami.
