AS the country awaits President Umar Musa Yar’Adua to make the much expected changes of helmsmen of the various ministries, a sports administrator has advised that nothing will change if the status quo of having a Minister and Director General as heads of the National Sports Commission (NSC) is maintained.

Information which filtered out from the presidency recently had it that the changes will not be made until after the Ramadan and Independence Day holidays and with that over now, the expected announcement of the new ministers is being awaited with bated breath.
One of the technocrats the country has been lucky to have told Saturday Vanguard Sports on phone Thursday that much should not be expected from the expected change unless the position of minister for the NSC is scrapped to allow for a Chairman who will be at the head of a Board.
“If the position of Minister/Chairman as it is now remains, nothing will change. The position of Director General is also not necessary as it whittles down the function of the director of sports who is supposed to be the anchor man of the sports commission”, the administrator said.
He said during the days of the late Isaac Akioye as Director of Sports of the NSC, the Edo-born administrator was the think-tank of the NSC and he formulated programmes for the commission and things worked well then.
The administrator who preferred anonymity said the chairman of the NSC should not necessarily be a technocrat but must be someone who is ready to learn from the technocrats in the system, adding that politicians could still be accommodated on the Board of the NSC since theirs would be to help formulate policies and push for its approval by the government.
The source also said that the private sector has lost confidence in the present system and would not be too willing to partner with the sports commission unless the system is properly restructured for effective planning of functional programmes for the sports men and women.
