DELTA State police command’s spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka yesterday called on inhabitants in Obetim who fled their homes to return to their base as calm has returned.
Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) told Vanguard on phone yesterday afternoon that, “We (police) have successfully curtailed the crises, by sending many policemen there to ensure maintenance of peace and order. As I speak, calm has returned, so I appeal that people should go about their lawful duties.”
Asked if any arrest has been made, the PPRO said, “No arrest has been made but calm has returned.” Crisis broke out recently when two warring factions in Obetim community clashed over claims and counter claims of which local government the community is properly situated.
As a result of the mayhem, many people, especially women and children have fled their homes. Whilst some people from the boundary community are claiming that the community is properly located in Ndokwa East local, another group led by the traditional ruler of the community is kicking against it.
A group of women who fled the community staged a peaceful protest in Asaba.
Addressing the women in Asaba, the Permanent Secretary in the SSG office, Mr. Andy Omokri who stood in for the SSG told the women “government is already addressing the issue.
Fighting and crisis cannot solve the problem of Obetim-Unor people wanting to be in Ndokwa East or Ndokwa West. People should have confidence in government. You should allow peace to reign whether you are in Ndokwa east or west, you are still in Delta state we all one”, he stated.
