AWKA— FORMER Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chris Ngige, says there is nothing to cheer about the 48 years of Nigeria’s independence.
Ngige, who spoke in an interview in Awka, asked the Nigerian elite to ask for forgiveness after squandering the opportunities that political independence brought the nation. “At 48, I don’t think there is anything to cheer about in Nigeria. It would be a time for us to pray and ask God to forgive us, especially the elite because they have failed the country”. “Those who didn’t go to school, those pushing trucks, driving okada, selling egusi and pepper in the market; we can exonerate, but for those of us who went to school and acquired certificates, western education and technology, and, yet, came back and used the same knowledge to start demolishing our brothers and country, I think we should ask for forgiveness. We have failed”.

, on 01-10-2008 01:38 , IP: 192.75.47.13 This is a fact. Not only that Nigerian "so-called" leaders failed the people but also the country has failed itself. Take for example, somebody like Andy Uba, who lived in Canada and the US, who came back with forged certificates is going around doing bad things. If there is accountability in Nigeria, he should be asked to present his original certificates. Thus, unfortunately the Ibos are very disintregated today in the society whereby instead of trying to love one another to fight a common goal many use wickedness to destroy fellow Ibos. No one to blame than ourselves. We should all try to "LIVE AND LET LIVE" and then, Nigeria will be a better place for our posterity. Goddy
2 concience leaders. Written by prf. Benson , on 01-10-2008 04:59 , IP: 121.8.24.106 Ngige is the type of leader we need in this country now, leaders who have concience that will listen to the poor Nigerians and will like to take away their suffering go to Anambra state and see what he did there, you will know that trully action speaks louder than voice. unlike what is happening now in that state gov. Peter Obi is talking more, but he is doing nothing in that state let his action speak for him.

, on 01-10-2008 09:57 , IP: 77.186.126.7 Let me comment on what the former Governor of Anambra state Dr Chris Ngige said in relation to Nigeria\'s independence and how far we have come as a nation . First, our leaders have failed and failed woefully.Progress has been painfully slow-from peoples welfare to accountability to fiscal discipline. It is very unfortunate that Nigeria does not possesss a \'resignation culture\'-where weak performance in office should warrant an immediate resignation as is done in most European nations. Second it is evident that our so called leaders are out of touch with mainstream Nigerians-still surrounding themselves with all the trappings of office. They have practically doused themselves with so much exotic perfume that their nostrils fail to take in the stench emanating from not only from their corrupt bodies but also from the rubbish that has littered our roads for days on end. What our Nigerian leaders should be doing at this point in time is to compare ourselves with those nations that gained their independence at the similar time as ours and to see if progress has really been made . However I would like to disagree with Ngige on his point of exonerating the ordinary Nigerian. For how long should we Nigerians continue to be docile to our leaders;South Africa is not where she is today because the majority of people were passive and docile but active -and said with one voice that enough is enough. We lack this vital attitude and the earlier we acquire it the better.Unfortunately our independence was gained without the shedding of a single drop of blood thus we take things so unseriously that we have become so blind and mute to rally against those in office.A movement is needed to demonstrate that we finally mean business as regards our welfare and those of our children-so that by the time we celebrate 50years of nationhood we can do so with a genuine sense of achievement.May God continue to bless Nigeria despite our failings.

, on 01-10-2008 11:18 , IP: 195.32.89.180 It is a pity that Ngige I have always held in high regard should just come back from overseas and rather than acknowledging great strides by Gov. Obi went back into petty politics that I thought his own personal experiences should have thought him to avoid. Well it seems true we hardly learn even from our own experiences. I thought Ngige should have known that insincerity never pays! I respect Ngige for what he did and under the hostile political circumstances he did them. But then I was totally disappointed to see Ngige making such ridiculous remarks about what the present government is doing - a feat that has been recognized even by those who shouldn't have done that. When we read what Ngige said, we didn't believe it at first, thinking it was a media misrepresentation! We believe Ngige should also be the first to ask for God's forgiveness for denying His gift to Anambra State through the present administration. Ngige, to be honest with you, we lost the big hope and praise we have for you. We never knew you could become so cheap after what we considered your personal political 'baptism of fire' that would and should have brought you mature above board. But it seems we were mistaken. People never learn!

What He 'NGIGE'did was to say that that all the elites who have gotten western education instead of using it to impact positively on the people have used it against the people. cant he express his view on the state of the nation. Nigeria still have a long way to go,where do we start a question that we should ask ourselves. A lot of work need to be done in this country, from the head to toe.We need active leaders and active citizens. let everybody sit up and face the future.

, on 01-10-2008 19:00 , IP: 82.38.236.232 Dr. Chris Ngige stands out as the only Nigerian with the moral courage to state the fact, known to all, that the Nigerian story is regretably woeful,as there is nothing positive to show for the 48 years of self-rule.Our religious leaders need to wake up and speak,if they want us to believe that they are serving the living GOD.Nigerians are suffering in one of the most blessed countries of the world !This is BAD,to put it mildly.
