Hi, my name is Veronica and I am a regular of Vanguard Allure. I relaxed my hair last August for the first time after secondary school. I used relaxing cream [name withheld]. Shortly after, my hair started changing into golden colour, especially in the front. I relax every month with the same cream. I want
my hair to go back to its former colour. Should I dye it or change my product? I also have severe itching caused by either dandruff or scalp irritation because I have a very sensitive scalp. Please what should I do?
Dear Veronica,
You have raised 4 issues here and they are as follows:
1. Your hair changing colour to golden brown within such a short time of applying relaxing cream to your virgin hair. I did not bother to put the name of the product you use because I do not think the brand of product is important. But I can tell you that your hair is changing colour because you are not getting rid of all traces of the cream from your hair after the chemical process. Does your product come with a neutralizing shampoo that will remove all traces of the chemical from your hair during the straightening procedure? If not, did your stylist use any colour-coded brand of neutralizing shampoo to ‘wash’ your hair? It is important to always use this neutralizing product every time you apply relaxing cream so that you can stop the chemical action leading to straighter hair; otherwise, the chemical continues to act and react in the hair, eventually turning the hair into an orange or ginger shade. The problem is that most women concentrate on the choice of relaxing cream without paying much attention to all the after-care products they will need. The relaxing cream is not as important as the other things you need to have healthy hair. And this brings me to the next point you raised.
2. What can you do to get your hair back to its original colour? You have not specified what colour your hair is, but I imagine that it will be either very black or natural black. I am afraid that you cannot convert the hair to black again now it is golden, but you may NOT dye it either. Any dye available will contain peroxide or ammonia, which means that you will be putting two kinds of chemical in your hair. Apart from that, the dye may change you hair colour to black with a greenish tinge; eventually you will be left with three different colours in your hair- dirty golden brown, dull green and a dirty black. The only acceptable product for you now is a black rinse that will be applied on the day you have a touch-up, so that it can etch on to your hair properly and effectively. Of course it goes without saying that you are doomed to continue applying this rinse to your undergrowth every time you have a touch-up so that the hair can maintain a uniform color. If however you do not want to apply a rinse, then you have to wait for the golden color to grow out, so that when you get new hair, you can take better care of it by making sure you always use neutralizing shampoo every time you apply relaxing cream.
3. Why are you having a touch-up every month? The industry recommendation is 6 weeks, and the tendency is to try and extend the periods in between touch-ups. If you find that you ‘need’ a touch-up [as opposed to ‘want’] every 4 weeks, then something is obviously wrong with either your product or the strength you are using. Who recommended the relaxing cream to you? Did you have a proper consultation before you chose that product? If your product is inferior in terms of its ingredients, then you may be using a raw but glorified form of sodium hydroxide, and this would inevitably also account for the change in color to gold. Raw ‘lye’ will change the color of hair from black to a ginger hue. So I would advise that you see a professional to recommend the right cream for you that will suit your hair and scalp type.
4. And this brings me to the question of your sensitive scalp. Everyone says they have sensitive scalp and that is because their hair’s peculiar characteristics are never taken into consideration when their hair is handled. If you have dandruff, then you should be using dandruff shampoo regularly. But if you have irritation, then you need to find out what is irritating your scalp. You probably need to pay more attention to applying a good scalp cream when you are styling your hair. Try our flake control scalp cream for quick relief from itching and dandruff. Do you use a lot of synthetic attachment on your hair? This could explain the itching, especially if you wear braids a lot. Now you know your scalp is sensitive, then you need to treat it with a lot of TLC. Do not aggravate it further with too much hairdressing.
Thanks for writing in, Veronica and do make it a great week!
