Bobby Eke, the creative head stylist of Bobby Signature, a top class salon in Lagos needs no introduction in the hair and beauty industry.
Eke
He is not only a pioneer of modern salons, he is one of those who have taken salon services to a comfortable next level. And his effort was recently recognised during the Hair Industry Achievement Awards organised by African Hair and Beauty Magazine. Bobby was awarded Best Salon along side Down Town Salon, Glamour Salon, KOS Hair World Salon, Limit Nails and Hair World Salon. Clad in a blazer and matching pants, yours sincerely caught up with the clean shaven stylist as he spoke on the awards and more.
How do you feel? Well, it feels good to be recognised. At least, it will gear one towards doing more for the industry. And now that people have shown that hard work does pay, one would tend to put in more and get more creative because you want to get to a level ahead.
You’ve been in this industry for almost two decades now. What is your perception of the hair and beauty industry? Oh well, it has really grown rapidly and I thank God for what He is doing in the industry. We are getting better, we are getting more skilled and we are getting informed about products and manufacturers are showing so much interest in the country. I think it is a good thing compared to those days when we practically had to run after them. But now, they know what we have and they are coming after us and I think it’s going to get better.
What challenge do you face considering the fact that people are more style-conscious and their demand very high? Basically, if you are skilled, you are skilled and if you are talented, you are talented. So there is little or no challenges associated with this. All you need to do is to have a good foundation, that is why I always tell people that you need to have a fantastic foundation because that is what you build on. If you have a good foundation and you are well grounded on the tenets of hairdressing, the rest is easy.
What is women’s choice? We can’t be talking about women’s choice. We talk rather about what the individual feature can take. Like in my salon, it’s not about you coming with a style, it’s about you allowing us to do something that will suit your facial structure, your body structure and the business that you do.
Does that mean if a customer insists, you would turn the person back? Not at all but what we do is to try as much as possible to do a little bit of consultation. When you consult with a client, you’d be able to talk to the person and may be you’d be able to convince the person on what is best to do.
What is your style preference? I’m a very casual person. So I like jeans. But because I’m very casual, I love nice accessories especially when it has to do with your shoes and wrist watch
What won’t you do in the name of fashion? I won’t wear something that wouldn’t go with my body structure. I dress to suit my body. I won’t wear something because every other person is wearing it. It has to agree with my person, my body structure and my mood at that time.
Do you have any philosophy of life? I have two; dreams can be achieved. A dreamless sleep is death, which means when you dream, go for it. You can always live your dream. The second philosophy is to do unto others as you would want others to do unto you. Nobody knows tomorrow, only God knows. Whatever you are today is because of God. What you will be tomorrow is God. And the person coming behind, only God can tell what he will be tomorrow or what God has in store for him.
For one who devotes his time to making women’s hair, is it not ironic that he doesn’t have hair on his head or will a day come when we would see Bobby with hair? It is not possible. It is not possible. This is just me. Is it branding for you?Not really. It makes me feel a lot cleaner. I don’t like hair on my head. Despite the fact that I am a hairdresser, I am not totally a very meticulous person. So I want something that I can wake up and go with.
