Alhaji Sikiru Ayodeji Shitta-Bey, a versatile lawyer and frontline politician during his active days in politics, was elected into the Federal House of Representatives in 1965 as a member representing Lagos North Central Constituency on the platform of the defunct Action Group.
While representing this constituency, he, along with others, campaigned tirelessly both within and outside the parliament for the creation of Lagos State. He was elected into the Senate in 1979 representing the Lagos Senatorial District.
77 year old Shitta-Bey, a national honour recipient of Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) has been in legal practice for 48 years. Last weekend, he moved the head office of his law firm from 24 Kakawa Street, Lagos, to a magnificent complex on Plot 136, Alake Onile-Ere Crescent, Gbagada Phase 2.
The commissioning of the complex, which was performed by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu 1, attracted several personalities such as chief judges of Lagos State, Justices Christopher Segun and Samuel Omotunde Ilori, as well as Mr Ola Vincent, former governor of Central Bank, Chief S.O.B. Babalola, Alhaji Kola Animasaun and Mr Lawal Pedro, who represented Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos.
In this interview, Alhaji Shitta-Bey, who has put in 48 years of legal practice but has not been privileged to be called into the inner bar, called for the review of the criteria for the award of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) as well as the composi-tion of the privileges committee that award the title. He also argued that the Police Service Commission has not followed due process in dismissing former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, from the Police Force. Such dismissal, accord-ing to him, could not stand legal scrutiny at the law court. Excerpts:

After scrutinizing the complaints in the various Grounds of Appeal filed by the Appellants in each of the appeals, the issues formulated therefrom and the arguments proffered thereon by the parties, it is my view that the issues that call for determination in the appeals boil down to the following- 1. Whether, in the circumstances of this case, the Tribunal was right to use the evidence of Olawale Kayode, the Head of Operations of INEC in Edo State, who testified as PW47, in arriving at its decision. 2. Whether the Tribunal applied the right standard of proof in arriving at its decision. 3. Whether the Tribunal was right to rely on Charts A to O drawn up by the Petitioners in coming to its conclusion. 4. Whether or not the Tribunal declared the 1st Petitioner as winner of the election on the basis of 4 Local Governments only.
