The federal government has been enjoined to implore the needed political will to enable them come out of the woos of unemployment and enter into self reliance. These were the views of prominent Nigerians during the presentation of a new: The Handbook of Skill Acquisition Training and Empowerment Programmes at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
The 824-page book published by the International Centre for Sustainable Development, Nigeria, written by Dr Ben Onoriode Irikefe, a member of the Presidential Panel on National Security and a leading Consultant to the Federal Government on the training of ex-militants in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region proffers a lot of solutions to the nations unemployment woos.
The author takes a holistic approach to the training of members of the Civilian JTF, the repentant Boko Haram operatives and ex-militants in the country noting that it is a book capable of removing Nigeria from the clutches of recession.
It explained a step by step module of how life and business skills can be transferred to young, indigent, frustrated and angry Nigerians.
Also, the book is a compendium of skill Acquisition and entrepreneurial trainings for a teeming population of unemployed youth not only in Nigeria but in every part of the world.
In his review, the Media Consultant for Ex-Militants in the Niger Delta region, Sunday Onyewonsa described the literary work as a piece of cerebral excellence, “the book is good for governments across tiers noting that except the recommendations made by the author were adopted with the needed political will, the unemployment and self reliance thrust of the FG will be an illusion,” he added.
He further stated that training manual places Nigeria in the league of countries that have produced world class authors on such genre of literature with worldwide applicability.
“This book is capable of facilitating the lifting of several people out of poverty worldwide and the revolutionising conventional educational systems,” he explained.
Onyewonsa further stated that the book stands out because it positions actualisation of Skill Acquisition Training and Empowerment as a stand – alone domain of human capital development /investment.
On his part, the author, Dr Irikefe said having been practically involved in training and integration of repentant restive youths across the country for over two decades, he has decided to come up with the book which he added was the first of its kind in the world.
He is of the view that a holistic Skill Acquisition Training and Empowerment Programme should comprise of a four-fold components of Vocation Specific Training; Soft and Life Skill Training; Entrepreneurship Development Training and Post Training Empowerment.
The author stated further that, vocational and technical education be taught alongside and within conventional academic curriculum so that graduates can be equipped vocation specific trade just as Arch. Andrew Okosodo, who was the Chairman of the event recommended the book for tertiary institutions in the country stressing that the book should be accommodated in school curriculum to pave way for vocational education so as to de-emphasize dependency on white collar jobs in the country.
