Recent decision by Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi , to re-construct the dilapidated Oji River – Ugwuoba road which has turned into a death trap and nightmare to motorists, has been widely applauded by all and sundry. In fact, that singular decision has gone a long way to ingratiate the amiable Governor in the minds of both the people of the state and visitors as well. Based on this, a Lagos based Industrialist and Chairman/ Founder of the first Agricultural International market, east of Niger; Chief Eugene Ibeaham, bared his mind to Emma Nnadozie over the positive development in his state, Enugu.
“My aim of applauding the Governor of Enugu state publicly is to serve as an eye opener to other Governors in the South East and beyond on the urgent need to hearken to the yearnings of their people.
Before now, that road which was serving as the only accessible road after the Federal Government express way was badly damaged and neglected, was a succour to Nigerians that ply from West, East and North.
Then, wear and tear set in and it was like, ‘to your tents, Oh Israel ‘, as motorists had to spend many man hours while passing through Orji River- Ugwuoba section of the old road to the commercial city of Onitsha in Anambra State. ” Then Governor Ugwuanyi graciously awarded the contract for the re-construction of the road without delay.
Not only that, he awarded the contract to the company of a respected indigene of the state, Anayo Onwuegbu aka Omeiheukwu, and it was like our charity beginning from home. Other Chief Executives would have either given it to a foreign company or even to a contractor from his home town but, he shamed critics by that singular gesture.
Benefits of the re-construction
“Re-construction of that road will alleviate the suffering of the people of Orji-River, Enugu state and Nigerians who ply it daily for their respective engagements.
However, now that he has taken the bull by the horn, I will humbly call his attention to Ugwuoba link road from the end of Ezi-Ejike Aniocha old road. What this very important road of about a quarter of kilometre need, is to be linked to the expressway.
If done, it will help in turning around commercial activities in the state and save lives of our people who are being killed daily by heavy trucks that normally experience brake failures while descending from both ends of Enugu – Onitsha express way, towards Orji River Urban market.
It will also provide a diversion for travellers from both ends of the express way, from Awka and Enugu at Agbarenyi bye pass and rejoin the express way.
Army Forward base and Agric Industrial Market
“Furthermore, there is an army forward base at that Ezi-Ejike and this road when constructed will enable them to man both the old road and expressway, in rainy and dry seasons.
This will promptly prevent the robbery attacks experienced on the roads. The former Chairman of Orji-River L.G.A, Hon. Gabriel Onuzike, put all his effort into repair of that road but time was not on his side. “Beyond this, there is a large mass of plain and level land between Enugu and Anambra states waiting for investors to tap into.
Already, a very big Agricultural International market is there and factories and other businesses are presently springing up along the area. An example of what will happen to this area is what is happening at Agbara Industrial Estate between Lagos and Ogun states. It can be replicated in the land between Anambra and Enugu states.
The people of Enugu and other states in the east and beyond will definitely benefit from this if the road is constructed even before the four -year tenure of Governor Ugwuanyi ends.”
