Awka—A suspected robber, Mr. Uche Ezeugo, arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS, in Anambra State, has blamed hard times in the country for his action, claiming that he robbed to raise money to enable him give his dead father a befitting burial.
His accomplice, Somadina, who was also arrested by the DSS, similarly blamed his action on the current economic situation, which has caused hunger and starvation.
The suspects, who hail from Agulezechukwu in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, were arrested at Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state for allegedly stealing some laptops.
Ezeugo, who is in his 20s, said: “I am not a natural thief. It is this hard condition that led me into this temptation.”
While pleading for leniency, the two suspects informed DSS that it was their first time of committing such a crime.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sam Okaula, who appreciated the men of DSS for the arrest, said that the collaboration between the police and other security agencies had helped in reducing crime and criminality in the state.
The commissioner said the laptops had already been disposed off by the suspects before they were arrested, adding that they would soon be charged to court after investigations.
He added that two pump action guns and one locally-made rifle were recovered from the suspects.
