Lagos—SPEAKER of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa has called for regular campaigns against violence, rape and abuses as a means of curbing the incessant rape cases in the state.
Obasa disclosed that the law enforcement agencies including the police should put more effort in their pursuit against violence.
The Speaker said this, yesterday, at the Assembly plenary under Matter of Urgent Public Importance.
According to him, rape cases goes beyond calling attention of parents but to call relevant agencies to enforce existing laws to prosecute rape offenders to serve as deterrent to others.
In his contribution, a member representing Apapa Constituency I, Mojisola Meiranda decried that the rate at which sexual abuse and criminal cases occur in the State is very alarming and disheartening.
She said: “I came across a story of a 13year old girl in a national newspaper who was gang raped and got pregnant by three men including a 60 year old in Owode Ibeshe area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
So, parents and guardians should be watchful of the kind of people they leave their children and ward with, either male or female. Children and wards should also be educated to raise alarm when they sense danger.”
