The Executive Chairman of the Federal Nigerian Society for the Blind, FNSFB, Asiwaju Fola Osigbo, has commended President Muhamadu Buhari’s appointment of Dr.Samuel Inalegwu Ode Ankeli, a visually impaired person as his Senior Special Assistant on People Living with Disabilities.
In a statement to announce the unveiling of the ‘White Cane Day’, slated for August 13, Osigbo stated :”The appointment of Dr. Ankeli, a visually impaired doctorate holder, is a proof of President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement and a fact that there is abundant ability in disability.
“The ‘ White Cane Day’ is an annual charity and public enlightenment programme to draw the attention of the public to the plight of the blind and partially sighted persons in our society so that everyone would know how to lend a helping hand. It is a pity that in Nigeria, members of the public still do not assist the visually impaired and in many cases people still treat them as unwanted persons.
In Ghana, most people know their responsibility to the blind.”He urged members of the society to lend a helping hand to individuals that are visually impaired. “It is everyone’s responsibility to lend a helping hand to blind people in order to cross the road, warn them of dangers ahead, assist in getting in and out of the public transportation.”
