In view of a potential quarter-final clash against hosts Brazil, Coach of the U-23 team, Samson Siasia said his wards are more focused on beating their next group B opponents, Colombia on Wednesday.
Nigeria’s place in the quarter-final was secured with Sadiq Umar’s header against Sweden on Sunday and Siasia expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. However, according to the coach, it is one game at a time in the competition for gold in Rio 2016.
“I think for me and the boys all we are doing now is taking it a game at a time, we are not bothered about the team we will be playing in the quarter finals, let’s play Colombia first and from there we will think of our opponents at that stage.
“The issue of the team I will prefer to play in the quarter final stage doesn’t arise now; what is uppermost in my mind is getting my boys focused for every game.”
Also captain, John Obi Mikel spoke in a similar vein.
“It is good to avoid the home team, of course, but we will be attentive to the next game. Then we think of Brazil.
“If there is a chance to play with them? Yes of course. Very possible but let’s think of a game at a time. Then you think about it.”
Barcelona pair Neymar and Rafinha, and Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain are in the Brazilian roster for the Olympic Games, and were all involved in the goalless draws with South Africa and Iraq.
