…heir apparent heads to court

ONITSHA—The tussle for the traditional stool of Awka Etiti in Idemili local government has taken a turn for the worse as the heir apparent and first son of the late monarch, Crown Prince Chuma Ojukwu has dragged the president general, Mr John Unachukwu to court on grounds of plot to deny his ascent to the throne.
Others joined in the suit No HID/58/2016 pending at the High court in Ogidi are the secretary general, Mr Charles Okonkwo, the regent, Ichie B.O Ezenagu and the secretary, Igwe in council, Ichie Ebele Enemuo.
The matter which was first heard on March 22, 2016 was adjourned to June 21,2016 for further hearing.
The suit followed alleged attempt by the President general and those joined in the suit to implement the town’s constitution of 2004 said to have been drafted and signed by the former president general without consultation with the late monarch.
The draft constitution provided for rotational traditional rulership for the town as against the traditional hereditary practice.
In the suit filed by his lawyer, Mr Chukwuma Eloka Philip, Prince Ojukwu prayed the court to grant that he, the first son of the late Igwe J.O Ojukwu, now the current crown prince of Awka Etiti royal dynasty be selected and coronated as the Obi of Awka Etiti.
Other prayers included, “ a declaration that the plaintiff who is the heir apparent to the Obiship throne of Awka Etiti community be known and addressed as His Royal Magesty, Igwe Chukwuma Angus Ojukwu, Agujiugo 1, the Ezeudo ll (the Obi of Awka Etiti).
