Okada man shines at 2016 Community Awards Night

The night of Sunday, April 17 was remarkable to residents of Omole Estate, Phase 1. It was a night when the high, the mighty and the down trodden came together at the Event Centre, located inside the estate to celebrate themselves and give honour to those who were deserving of honour.

The tone for the night’s event was set by young aspiring comedians, led by the effervescent The Don whose rib-cracking jokes made every one forget the reality of Nigeria’s current worries, at least momentarily.  It was the 2016 Omole Phase 1 Residents Association(O.P.R.A.) Dinner and Awards Night where hard work, resilience and philanthropy were recognised and duly rewarded. Chief Host of the event, Biodun Rufai, also the chairman of the Omole Phase 1 Residents Association was the happiest man on the night.

The occasion which was chaired by the Lagos State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Alhaji Musiliu Olohuntele Folami. It was also graced by Honourable Kehinde Bamigbetan, Special Adviser to the Governor on community and Communications, while Princess Adegoke Orelope-Adefulire, a senior special adviser to the President on Sustainable Development Goals was special guest.

The Guest Speaker, Honourable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State, Honourable Wasiu Anifowose was overwhelmed by the occasion as he expressed joy at the manner the estate was being run by the residents. Numerous self-help projects had been executed. After listening to their complaints, most of which were commonplace, he promised to speedily facilitate the provision of a new transformer for the estate to improve the power supply. This drew wild applause from the audience.

Awards were given in various categories, including Special Recognition Award, Opra Special Award, Opra Corporate Social Responsibility Award, Best Public School Award and Best Private School Award, among others.

But the award that ignited the loudest ovation was that given to Johnson Ogbu, who was adjudged the Best Okada Man of the Year in Omole Estate. He got a monetary reward attached to his award.
