AAG: Nwamkpa warns over poor preparation

ObisiA Nwamkpa, a former Commonwealth Welterweight boxing champion on Wednesday decried the nation’s poor preparation towards the forthcoming 11th All Africa Games to hold in Congo Brazzaville.

The Games are scheduled to run from Sept. 4 to Sept. 19.

Nwamkpa told NAN that there was no significant arrangement in place to show that the country was preparing for major continental Games.

“I must express my disappointment at the way the sporting authority has been going about the Games. We have two months to be in Congo Brazzaville and it is obvious that nothing is happening.

“This edition of the AAG did not take us unawares; the authority knows that the Games hold every four years and we have been taking part in previous editions.

“I am sure that our budding boxers are not happy at this sad situation, because they are going to compete with countries that have been preparing for the past three years,” he added.

He added that the National Sports Festival (NSF) could have served as the appropriate buildup for the Games but it was postponed.

“The NSF is a competition that brings past and current champions of various sports across the nation together to defend their title and have chances of making the AAG trials.

“Up till now, no date has been fixed for the festival and it’s supposed to be an open festival, which could have played a major role toward the preparations for the AAG,” he said.

Nwamkpa, who was also a former head coach of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, advised the National Sports Commission to do the needful before it was too late .
