Yenagoa—The leadership of Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, worldwide, has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to allow eligible voters to vote candidates of their choice with Temporary Voters Cards, TVCs, where Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, are not available.
President of IYC, Udengs Eradiri, who spoke to newsmen in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, shortly after a meeting of youth leaders of South- South ethnic nationalities, said INEC should allow voters with TVCs to vote in the elections.
He lamented that most eligible voters in the Niger Delta region were yet to collect their PVCs and as such should be allowed to vote with their TVCs.
He said: “If the law has said that we have the right to vote, so any person with a TVC rather than PVC should be allow to vote and not be disenfranchised. The constitution guarantees every individual the right to vote and be voted for. Therefore, we are saying that in areas where people don’t have PVCs, they should be allowed to vote with their TVCs. Accordingly, the two should be valid.”
He lauded the commission for shifting the polls to March and April, saying “the extension has afforded some Nigerians the opportunity to get their PVCs.”
