ILORIN—Kwara State command of Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has arrested 166 illegal immigrants from Benin Republic and Niger Republic.
Spokesman of the command, Mr. Adeyemi Adesola, who confirmed this development in an interview with journalists in Ilorin, yesterday, said the illegal immigrants would be deported to their respective countries as soon as their travelling documentation was completed.
Adeyemi, who noted that the immigrants, being members of ECOWAS countries, had the rights to reside in Nigeria, insisted that such must be done with proper travelling documents.
He said the illegal immigrants, 27 from Benin Republic and 123 from Niger Republic and 46 others, were arrested during routine checks of the command in Offa, Kaiama and Ilorin.
Adeyemi noted that a lorry load of 46 passengers, confirmed to be illegal immigrants from Niger Republic, were intercepted in Ilorin on their way to Osogbo.
He said further enquiries confirmed that they did not have travelling documents and that they were going to Osogbo to seek menial jobs.
He also said that some were going for the first time, while some others had been there before.
Adesola also warned residents in Kwara to beware of illegal immigrants and notify appropriate quarters because of the security implications of their presence in the country.
