Abia State Governor, Dr. Theodore Orji, has pledged his government’s support for the forthcoming Commonwealth/Americas Unifying Wrestling Championship billed for Aba on August 31.

The championship, which will feature wrestlers from the Commonwealth nations and the Americas, also involves some of Nigeria’s best musicians, who are expected to entertain the fans at intervals during the event scheduled for Luxury City Hotel, Umungasi, Aba.

Speaking in his office when the UPWF World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, Osita Offor, also known as De Ultimate Commander, paid him a courtesy call.

Governor Orji, represented by his deputy, Emeka Ananaba, said he was delighted that such a big event was happening in his state, adding that the fall-outs of the championship would help Abia State in its youth development programme.

He told De Commander: “You have shown that it is not priests that preach the gospel. There are other apostles who have the talent from God to preach peace and make people happy.

“I want to thank you on behalf of Ochendo for bringing this project to Abia State. We are happy that it is happening in Aba, the melting point for all the Igbos.

“We are also excited that you will set aside 15 per cent of your earnings for charity and your pledge to establish a wrestling institute in Abia excites us. We will support you no matter what it takes.”

Earlier, the project coordinator of the championship, Nollywood star, Kanayo Kanayo, had intimated the governor on preparations for the event, which he said would cost an estimated N45 million.

Kanayo said, “we chose Aba for the bout because of the prime position of the city in Nigerian sports. It is also a city, whose inhabitants are noted for progressive way of doing things.

“De Ultimate Commander is a son of the soil and he believes in the saying that Charity begins at home.

“The championship is a mixture of wrestling and music, which will also help us in teaching the youths that they can make good use of their physical strength instead of going into crime.”

The Commonwealth/Americas Unifying Championship will feature such international wrestlers as Joe Legend, Shelton Benjamin, Tornado, Mr. Perfect, Steve Eden, Kwaito Kidd, Mr. Wrestling, Jimmy Palm, as well as De Ultimate Commander.
