5 policemen detained for allegedly assaulting lawyer in Onitsha

ONITSHA—Anambra Police Command may have detained five policemen for allegedly beating up a lawyer, Faustinus Andi, in the commercial city of Onitsha.

Their detention, according to police sources, was ordered by the state Commissioner of Police, Usman Gwary.
The policemen had last Tuesday evening, at about 7.30 p.m. allegedly manhandled Andi for daring to ask one of his learned colleagues, Ephraim Agubalu, why he was having an exchange of words with the policemen. at “3-3” area of Onitsha, near the state headquarters of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, where they allegedly mounted an illegal roadblock,

Narrating his experience in the hands of the policemen shortly after he returned from hospital, Andi, a human rights lawyer, said:  “I closed work for the day and left my office in Onitsha at about 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday evening and was driving towards my residence at Federal Housing Estate, “3-3” Area of Nkwelle-Ezunaka when I saw one of my senior colleagues, Agubalu, having an exchange of words with some policemen along the road.
