IBADAN—As the crisis over who emerges the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Oyo State rages, majority of the party members including some chieftains of Ibadan extraction have distanced themselves from other governorship aspirants insisting that an Ibadan man should be picked as candidate.
There are insinuations that those clamouring for an Ibadan man are against the former Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala and other non-Ibadan indigenes in the race.
Most of those who felt the move would be antithetical to the reconciliatory move of the party came from 15 local governments, including 11 from Ibadanland.
Some of them are Alhaji Nureni Akanbi, Chief Dejo Raimi, former Chairman of the party, Dr. Kola Balogun, former commissioner, Kunle Ishola, son of former Governor Kolapo Ishola, Olusegun Olayiwola, Taofeek Olayiwola and many others.
The governorship aspirants except Kehinde Olaosebikan had insisted on Sunday that they would only support an Ibadan man as the party’s candidate in the 2015 elections.
The aspirants opposed to non-Ibadan man included Senator Teslim Folarin, Prof. Soji Adejumo, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, Alhaji Azeem Gbolarumi and Seyi Makinde.
However, the Ibadan PDP chieftains met yesterday under the aegis of PDP Ibadanland Forum and dissociated themsfrom the stance of the other chieftains, saying; “we have passed through this stage as similar gang-ups and conspiracy cost us the mandate of the people of Oyo State in 2011.
It is only a mad person that would continuously tread the same route to a goal and expect to get to different destinations.”
