Ibadan – A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Tuesday dissolved the seven-year- old marriage between Niyi Ogunwole and his wife, Janet, for inflicting matchet cuts on her.
The presiding president of the court, Mr Ezekiel Ogundipe, held that Ogunwole was evil and shameless for always resulting to using matchet on his wife at the slightest provocation.
“It is even wrong to use matchet on anybody at all, let alone a woman.
“You are a barbaric human being and I don’t think that you should marry in the first place.
“I put an end to the union between both of you before you kill Janet,” Ogundipe said.
The court president ordered Ogunwole pay a monthly feeding allowance of N5,000 for the upkeep of the three children.
Earlier, in her evidence before the court, Janet said that her husband (Ogunwole) often resorted to using matchet on her at the slightest provocation in the house.
“Ogunwole chases me around the house with matchet and sometimes stabs me with broken bottles evident from all these scars on my body.
“On two different occasions, our church pastor pleaded with me but I can no longer cope because he keeps ringing it in my ears that he will kill me very soon.
“He is also a deadly Indian Hemp smoker and beer drinker,” Janet explained.
All Ogunwole said in his own defence was that his wife was always returning home late.
He however pleaded with the court not to separate them.
“In fact, we still had sexual intercourse in the last few days,” Ogunwole said.
Ogunwole is a commercial bus driver and had three children with Janet. (NAN)
