Yola—The battle for the removal of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State from office for allegedly insulting President Goodluck Jonathan has gathered momentum with no fewer than seven top Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members jostling for the governor’s seat.

There is a strong belief in the PDP camp that Nyako’s impeachment is a foregone conclusion following last week’s defection of four All Progressives Congress, APC, House of Assembly members into the PDP, making the 25 member state Assembly to be all PDP.

There were strong indications last night that the takeover of the House of Assembly by PDP might diminish the influence of the state governor, who defected to APC last December, and significantly limit his ability to influence the emergence of a successor from his current party.

However, the governor, it was learnt from close associates last night, appears unperturbed by the permutations of his opponents, hoping that the conspiracy against him would soon boomerang as the array of PDP politicians jostling for his seat would soon begin to fight against themselves.

One of the governor’s aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “What I can tell you is that Nyako is not perturbed at all over what the Presidency and some elements in Yola are plotting.

“The real problem they have is that very soon they will fight among themselves because the agenda they have is an evil one and will never and can never be supported by right-thinking Adamawa people.”

In anticipation of the removal of Nyako by the Assembly, seven strong contenders have already emerged to take over the mantle of leadership in the state.

Top on the list of contenders is Awwal Tukur, son of the immediate past National Chairman of the PDP, Bamanga Tukur, who is reportedly being supported by those who owe allegiance to the senior Tukur, among them, the current Minister for Youth Development and former governor of the state, Mr. Boni Haruna and Joel Madaki, the state chairman of PDP.

Other contenders are Dr. Ahmed Modibbo, Dr Umar Ardo, Mr. Markus Gundiri, Mr. James Barka , current Nigeria’s Ambassador to Tunisia, and the former Lagos State Military Administrator, Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.), who recently dumped Nyako’s APC for PDP.
