Chairman of the House Committee on Sports Honourable Godfrey Gaiya has assured Nigerians that it will not be business as usual for members of the Nigerian delegation to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Speaking in Abuja during the week, Gaiya who said he sponsored himself to Atlanta, USA to watch the Super Eagles take on Mexico in an international friendly March 5, disclosed that his committee was still studying the supplementary proposal submitted by the Nigeria Football Federation even as the committee was aware of the federal government’s World Cup grant of N1.29 billion to the NFF.

Apart from that, Gaiya said the NFF will also get FIFA grant. Said he, “we are also aware that they have participation fee and appearance fee from FIFA. It is a grant given to all participating federations.”

The committee chairman said, “they said from their own working calculation, they still have a shortfall of N800 million. But of course it is a proposal. We are looking at items we can trim down. We don’t expect it to be a jamboree; we don’t want frivolous expenses.”

The lawmaker said his committee would step up its oversight function and ensure every kobo spent – from May 26 to the final of the World Cup -  is accounted for. “We must be there when bonuses are given, we want to know how many people would go for the tournament; all the figures, cost of the hotels and so on. So we will go through it all because of accountability,” he said.
