THE Directorate of Sport in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in partnership with the Olumawu Basic Education School in the FCT has organized an inter-school chess competition to build mental capacity of students.

Fifteen schools operating in the FCT took part in the just concluded inter-school chess competition, organised by the Olumawu Basic Education School, Wuse 11, Abuja.

At the end of the event, a government-owned school, Federal Government Academy, Suleja, emerged winner of the competition and it was presented with a gift in honour of the late founder of the school, Mrs. Margret Audu.

Addressing journalists on the event, a member of the governing council of the school, Mr. Ola Garuba, said the event, held for the third time, was aimed at building a well-rounded education.

He said: “You know children have varying talents and various areas of harnessing such talents must be looked into. So, we identified chess to train or develop the minds of the children and their mental capabilities.

“We are looking for things to take them (children) away from social media that add nothing to them. This is a challenge and we cannot look away. So, you have to come up with something strong and different to keep them busy.”
