Delta House elects new Speaker

Asaba — Delta State House of Assembly, yesterday, elected Mr. Peter Onwusanya as its new Speaker, following the resignation of the immediate past Speaker, Mr. Victor Ochei.

Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Basil Ganagana, who presided over yesterday’s plenary, read out a letter of resignation from the erstwhile Speaker, Mr. Ochei.

After reading Ochei’s letter of resignation, the Deputy Speaker called for nomination since the office of the Speaker had been declared vacant.

At that point, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Johnson Erijo, nominated Onwusanya, and was seconded by the member representing Ika North-East constituency, Prince Sam Obi.

When no other nomination was made, a voice vote was called, and  Onwusanya was  elected the new Speaker.

The new Speaker, an Accountant by profession, was immediately sworn in and he took over the officiating of the sitting of the House from Deputy Speaker, Mr. Ganagana.

He sought the cooperation of his colleagues, saying, “I humbly wish to solicit your support and cooperation at all times to make me succeed in this great task and responsibility you have reposed on me.”

The former Speaker, Ochei, was  absent at yesterday’s sitting.

Present at yesterday’s sitting were the state Chairman of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Chief Ighoyota Amori and the wife of the new Speaker, among others.
