AKURE — SPEAKER of Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Adesina Samuel Ajayi, 52, is dead.

Hon Ajayi died yesterday following a protracted battle with the Cancer of the Urinary bladder, throwing the House into mourning as colleagues betrayed their emotions and wept openly.

The late Speaker had been bed ridden in the past six months, while the rumour of his death had been spreading across the state since November last year.

Members of the House of Assembly who came early to the assembly for plenary betrayed their emotions as news of the demise of the speaker was confirmed.

The Assembly complex erupted as the news spread and workers burst into tears as they gathered in groups to discuss the death of the Speaker.

The deputy speaker, Dare Emiola has been acting since September last year when the deceased Speaker was hospitalised at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos.

A statement by the state government confirmed the death of the speaker.

The statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Olurotimi Adelola in Akure, said: “The  Ondo State Government has announced the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Adesina Samuel Ajayi, representing  Odigbo Constituency 11.  The late speaker during his life time was a bridge builder, a man of integrity and a reliable team player who placed the interest of the state above personal considerations.

“The untimely death of the speaker occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, February 25, 2014, after a protracted battle with the cancer of the urinary bladder.

The Ondo State Government received the news with rude shock and disbelief and commiserates with the family of the late Speaker, the state legislature as well as the entire people of the state on this irreparable loss. It is our prayers that God will grant every one of us the fortitude to bear this loss.”

Leadership of the Assembly declined comment on the death of the speaker when contacted.

But some workers interviewed described his death after many months of pain as unfortunate.

They prayed that God would give his family the courage to bear the irreparable loss.
