The Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti on Youth and Sports, Michael Awopetu, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti.
Awopetu recalled that the club, formerly in the Nigeria Nationwide League, the third tier of the professional club football in Nigeria, gained promotion to the Nigeria National League last season.
“Gov. Fayemi is delighted with the outstanding performance of the team in gaining promotion to the Nigeria National League (NNL).
“The governor is also delighted with the club officials because they performed well to the expectation of the state government,’’ Awopetu said.
According to him, Ekiti United is endowed with the spirit of sportsmanship and commitment to promote the club beyond national level.
He commended the team for a good display against Kwara United in a pre-season friendly match on Sunday at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium.
Awopetu said that the match which ended goalless was to further prepare the team for task ahead in the NNL.
Awopetu, however, appealed to residents of Ekiti to give maximum support to the team so as to make the state proud in the NNL. (NAN)
