Abuja -  The National Secretary of Alliance for Democracy (AD), Mr Rafiu Salau, has urged politicians to always consider the ideology and manifesto of any political party before joining it.

Salau made the call in Abuja on Tuesday in an interview in Abuja

He said that defection was a normal trend, but politicians should allow ideologies to be their guiding principle when considering to defect.

“Defection is normal in a democratic setting, especially a multi-party state like ours, but party ideology should be considered by politicians in deciding to leave or stay in a political party,” he said.

He said his party was  preparing  for the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun and was optimistic of winning the elections.

According to Salau, all aspirants of AD are qualified to win the governorship election in the two states.

“Anyone that emerges as the candidate will be supported by others in the interest of the party.”

Salau called for the restoration of government’s funding of political parties.

According to him, political parties are like government institutions which also served the people.

“Since ministries are not funded by the directors and ministers but the government, political parties should also be funded by the government.

“Funding of political parties by its leaders make them see the parties as their properties.

“Government funding of political parties will serve the people better than they do presently,’’ he said.

The scribe said the political parties would, through the Inter-Party Advisory Council,  initiate a bill to the National Assembly to get legislative backing on funding of political parties.  (NAN)
