LAGOS — For raping and attempting to kill a 29-year-old woman (names withheld) and stealing her N235,000 worth of items, one 27-year-old man, Ojo Babatunde Ayodele, was yesterday arraigned before Mrs Demi Ajayi in an Ebute Metta magistrate’s court.
The incident was said to have occurred at Ikorodu.
In the five-count charge, Ayodele was accused of attempting to kill woman by cutting her with a knife while forcefully having sexual intercourse with her.
He was also accused of stealing Apple mark book laptop valued at N215,000, hard disk valued at N15,000 and camera battery valued at N5,000.
After the accused pleaded not guilty, his lawyer, Mr I. Adebowale applied for his bail but the prosecutor, ASP Etim Nkankuk, opposed the bail plea on the ground that the accused is suffering some mental problem which may lead him to kill unsuspecting members of the public.
He also said the accused does not have a fixed address, hence the bail plea by his lawyer should be ignored.
But on the contrary, the magistrate pointed out that the prosecutor did not have any proper medical evidence of the accused being mentally incapacitated and that the prosecutor is not an expert in the medical field.
Mrs Ajayi, thereafter, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum who should be at least 40 years old, gainfully employed, one of which must be a blood relation. She adjourned the case till March 31, 2014 for further hearing.
