We ‘ll overcome conditions for state creation – Ekweremadu

ABUJA – DEPUTY Senate President and Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday reiterated his committee’s determination to make history by approving requests for creation of more states in Nigeria.

But he emphasised that the conditions spelt out in the existing constitution for state creation were so stringent even as he assured that they would be overcome.

Speaking while a group under the aegis of Southern Kaduna People’s Union, SOKAPU, visited him to present an amended request for creation of Gurara State out of the present Kaduna State,Ekweremadu said: “The conditions are stringent but necessary.

“As stringent as it is, we will overcome it. By the grace of God it will be achieved and at our level we will do our possible best.”

Earlier, the group,through its
President, Dr Ephraims Goje, explained that their mission was to present an amended version of their request for creation of Gurara State out of present Kaduna State.

He said the proposed state which is in Southern Kaduna had 13 local government areas.

He said they made the application in accordance with section 8(1) (a) i, ii, iii, (b), (c) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“We hereby pray the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and all the 36 state Houses of Assembly to accede to the long term wish of the Southern Kaduna people and approve the creation of Gurura State, ” Goje said.

“The demand for the creation of Gurara State duly is endorsed by more than two thirds of the elected representatives at all levels, community development association, traditional rulers and elders from the vast region of the proposed Gurara State,”he added.
