MAKURDI — AT least two police officers were confirmed dead while several others sustained varying degrees of injury in a ghastly accident when a bus conveying 48 officers of the Police Mobile Force skidded off the road and somersaulted at Ikpayongo, Aliade Local Government Area of Benue State, yesterday.
Vanguard gathered from sources that the ill-fated vehicle was conveying the police officers from Maiduguri in BornoState to Port Harcourt upon completion of an assignment in the besieged state.
One of the survivors of the accident who pleaded anonymity told Vanguard on his hospital bed at the BishopMurrayHospital, Makurdi that the accident occurred at about 4 am when the vehicle had a collision with an on-coming bus.
He said: “We were travelling from Maidugiri after undergoing a four-month special assignment on Boko Haram insurgency. At Ikpayongo, our bus slightly came in contact with a Marcopolo bus on high speed from the opposite side and somersaulted, ending up in a ditch.
“I was in front of the vehicle. I saw as my colleagues were being evacuated. At a point, I became unconscious.”
A brother to one of the deceased who claimed to be a Police Inspector from KogiState said on hearing about the accident, he quickly rushed to Makurdi only to see his brother’s corpse.
Scores of family members of the injured were also seen at the hospital sympathizing with their relations.
Contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Daniel Ezeala confirmed the accident.
