IT was a day of mixed fortunes for Nigerian players on the opening day of the Governor’s Cup Futures I as three men qualified for the second round, while their female counterparts bit the dust of defeat yesterday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
First to reach the next round was Sani Adamu, who defeated Davis Cup member, Shehu Lawal in three sets of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The result came as a surprise to tennis faithful who watched the match on the Lord Rumens Centre Court.
Next to qualify was Clifford Enosoregbe, who faced little resistance from compatriot John out, who was forced to retire in the second set. Enosoregbe won the first set 6-1.
And for Nigerians ladies, the story was that of pain as three of them crashed out on day one of the tournament.
Zarah Razafmahatratra of Madagascar defeated Idia Amen in straight sets of 6-3, 6-2 Top seed from Slovakia, Tadeja Majeric did not drop a point in her 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Blessing Samuel.
And China’s Xi-Yao Wang also defeated Sarah Adegoke in another love service game of 6-0,6-0
