LAGOS — National President of the Advancement for Democracy and Development, ADD, Mr Abuchi Iwuji, has berated the Professor Ango Abdullahi-led Northern Elders Forum, NEF, for insisting that the North must produce the president in 2015.
Briefing newsmen at the end of an emergency National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Lagos, Iwuji said the statements attributed to the NEF leader were “highly condemnable,” noting that “it is totally unacceptable for Prof Ango Abdullahi and his group of elders of the North, to make provocative and uncharitable statements capable of inciting and misleading unsuspecting northerners against their southern brothers”.
Noting what he described as strings of unsubstantiated criticisms and outbursts by the group and other similar groups from the North against the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, he said: “For some time now, I have carefully followed the negative anti-Jonathan media attacks and blackmails particularly from this group, and it is quite disgusting, untenable and totally unacceptable to well-meaning Nigerians. I implore Nigerians to be careful about the intentions and activities of this group. Since I started to hear about them in the media, I have never seen them comment positively about Jonathan’s government.
“Since Nigeria’s independence in 1960, the North has ruled the nation for more years than the South. The rulership of this nation was in the hands of the North for more years than any other section, but no visible and sustainable achievements were made.
“It is disheartening to say that there is little or nothing to show for it. Any where you go in the North, all you see is poverty and negligence by their so called leaders. It is regrettable that most of the challenges we have today are simply the manifestations of the many years of misrule and neglect by past leaders.”
Querying the reasons behind the NEF agitation, Iwuji accused the group of embarking on political blackmail, aimed at achieving ethnic agenda, saying “I would want well-meaning northerners to ask Ango Abdullahi and his group what they have done for them over the years when they were in power. It is unfortunate that they have nothing to offer to the people. Their only interest is to ensure that the North rules this nation for ever. They have erroneous believe that the leadership of this nation belongs to the North.”
