ABUJA—The Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Ashraf Salama, Sunday, denied the claim by the Muslim Brotherhood that the ousted Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi was deposed by the military, saying the Egyptians themselves removed the president.
The envoy who disclosed this during a briefing in Abuja, declared that the ousted Egyptian president dug the grave for himself when he reneged on all his promises to the people of Egypt. He said that Egyptians could not wait for two more years to depose him, as the economic and political landscape was stuck in quandary.
The envoy said: “We don’t have even economic projects for a five-year plan to improve the lives of the people. They (Muslim Brotherhood) were all concerned on how they could distribute the piece of cake among themselves; how to distribute the positions, the companies and so on. There were a lot of discrimination against women.”
On Morsi’s whereabouts, the envoy said, “Morsi is not in prison because it is not a military coup; he is under the national security for his own protection.”
Salama noted further that the Egyptian authority is currently working out modalities to reach out to the African Union, AU, to convince it to rescind its decision suspending the country.
Salami said: “We had the conference for peace and security and we requested that AU member states should not take a hasty decision, rather they should find out before taking a certain decision about that because it is not a military coup. It is a coup by the people. We needed to do this.”
