By Evelyn Usman

Federal Government, yesterday, handed over the renovated Police College, Ikeja, to the Nigeria Police with a charge to ensure its proper maintenance.

Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who was at the college to inspect the renovation work carried out by the Nigerian Army Corps Engineers, expressed satisfaction with the work.

He said that its present state matched with what obtained elsewhere in the world.

Sambo disclosed that Federal Government would ensure that renovation work was carried out on all police colleges in the country.

He said that rehabilitation of police training institutions was one vital way to ensure that the country breeds efficient policemen, who would be ready to change the image of the Nigeria police.

At the end of his inspection, he said: “I want to assure you that all Police colleges in Nigeria would be reconstructed and rehabilitated like the Police College, Ikeja, and I want to charge you to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.”

Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, who accompanied the Vice President on the tour of the renovated buildings, disclosed that training at the college would commence immediately.”

He thanked the Federal Government for what he described as immediate effort taken to address the college’s former state.

Also present was the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade, who also urged management of the college to ensure its proper maintenance

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Army Corps Engineer got a marching order from President Jonathan in January to rehabilitate the college, following a disclosure of its deplorable state by a television station.

In all, 35 buildings were reportedly renovated with one of the structures pulled down. Areas renovated included the toilets, bathrooms, residential units, cafeteria and dormitories, amongst others.
