Nigeria coaches to pay for athletes’ dope sins

Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN has vowed to visit the sins of doping athletes on their coaches in an effort to discourage the abuse of banned drugs by Nigerian athletes.

According to Ken Anugweje who is medical director of the AFN, coaches whose athletes failed dope test at any AFN organized competition will be banned along side their athletes.

“Coaches will be held accountable if any of their athletes failed a dope test. We want to take a firm stand against doping in our country,” said Dr. Anugweje.

He said that each member country of the world athletics ruling body IAAF was at liberty to fix their own doping rules adding that the new regulation will take effect this year.

“We have the support of the sports ministry in what we are trying to do. In fact it was the sports minister that muted the idea and the AFN wholeheartedly adopted it,” added the University of Port Harcourt Don.
