Dutse – The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday said it had engaged 27 volunteers to enhance surveillance and check the menace of drug hawking in Jigawa.

The state Director of the agency,  Mr Kenneth Azikiwe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that the volunteers were engaged from the communities to raise awareness on its activities.

He said they would assist to intensify its campaign against drug hawking as well as circulation of substandard products at the grass root.

He said the agency was working in collaboration with the 27 local governments to enhance its campaign activities.

“Because of the intense heat in the cities, we realised that the drug hawkers have moved to rural communities.

“We are also collaborating with traders associations, community and religious leaders to intensify campaign against activities of drug hawkers in the society.

“These drug hawkers are merchants of death, what they are selling is poison.”

Azikiwe urged the communities to provide useful information to help control the menace. (NAN)
