Black Val: Musicians mourn as Goldie takes a bow
Nigeria’s music diva, Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey, popularly known as Goldie, who died Thursday night may have died as a result of Pneumonia- An inflammatory condition of the lung-affecting primarily the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli, according close sources to her.
As at yesterday, more facts have continued to emerge as to what killed the song-star while sources close to the departed singer attributed her sudden demise to Pneumonia(an inflammatory condition of the lung-affecting primarily the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli), others alleged that she died as a result of doping complications.
She died Thursday night at Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island, Lagos, and barely few hours after she arrived from Los Angeles, United States of America, where she attended the 55th Grammy Awards ceremony.
It was learnt that Goldie died in the presence of a Lagos-based
entertainer, Denrele Edun, who was in the hospital with her. Report says she started complaining of a terrible headache just before she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Many of Nigeria’s musicians were taken aback by the songster’s death.

I got the news and it was so shocking to me. I hardly believed it was true. When I first received the news on Thurday’s night, I prayed that it would later turn to lies that she is still alive. But finally, it has been confirmed that the talented singer is gone. It is a big pity.

Early Friday, a lot of Goldie’s fans gathered at Reddington Hospital trying to find out exactly what killed the popular singer.
Meanwhile, the management of Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island, Lagos, where Goldie gave up the ghost last Thursday night confirmed that the pop singer was clinically dead on arrival at the hospital despite efforts by its emergency responses staff to resuscitate her.
In a statement by the Corporate Affairs Manager of the hospital, Mr. Franklyn Ovbigbabon, the hospital said that the case is being handled by its Coroner’s office to determine the cause of her death. “Following a high level of media enquiries, the Reddington Hospital confirms that at around 7.30 pm on Thursday, February 14, 2013, a high profile media personality was brought to the Reddington hospital. She was clinically dead on arrival at the hospital. Despite this, emergency responses staff made every effort to resuscitate her.”
“The case is now being handled by the Coroner’s office to determine the cause of her death. The hospital offers its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased on this untimely loss of the loved one,”Mr. Ovbigbabon said.
Goldie reportedly died few hours after she arrived from Los Angeles, United States of America, where she attended the 55th Grammy Awards ceremony. It was learnt that Goldie died in the presence of a Lagos-based entertainer, Denrele Edun.

However, in a statement confirming her death, Kenny Ogungbe, the President of Kennis Music, said, “With a deep sense of loss, we announce the shocking death of our darling music star, Goldie Harvey. Goldie, 31, who died on Thursday after she complained of a severe headache shortly after her arrival from the United States where she went to witness the Grammy Award.
“We consider this period a gloomy moment for us and the entire Nigerian music industry in view of the circumstance in which she passed away; the abundance of talent she exhibited in her short but eventful music career and the various opportunities her trip to the United States of America would have availed her.
She is survived by her father, step-mother, brothers and sisters. We deeply sympathise with her family and fans all over the world and very grateful to all and sundry, especially, the vibrant Nigerian media for their concern and prompt reportage. We shall keep everybody informed as events unfold as we are devastated by the sudden loss,” Ogungbe said.
•Gov Fayemi mourns
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed shock on the death of multiple award winning pop music star.
The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, described the death of the artiste as a “big blow to the global entertainment industry.”
He praised Goldie for representing Nigeria well in last year’s edition of the Big Brother Africa competition where she won millions of admirers.
Fayemi also described Goldie’s death as a great loss to Ekiti State as the late star hailed from Ikole-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikole Local Government Area of the state.
With Goldie’s death, Fayemi said a bright star from Ekiti whose impact in the entertainment industry reverberated across the nation and the world stage has been eclipsed.
He noted that the works of the artiste brought joy to her fans all over the world saying that he derived consolation from the fact that although Goldie is dead, her music will remain in the hearts of her fans and admirers all over the world.The Governor urged the family of the deceased to be consoled that their daughter lived a fulfilled life and had carved a niche for herself in her chosen career.
Eye-witnesses said, Goldie was pronounced dead around 10:00pm, shortly after she was rushed to Reddington hospital in a red cab.
Those who reportedly were sighted at the hospital building were Kennis Music label boss, Kenny ‘Keke’ Ogungbe, his younger brother, ID Ogungbe, Denrele, former Big Brother winners, Uti Nwachukwu, Karen Igho and STV presenter Yvonne ‘Vixen’ Ekwere.
At 12:47 am, the singer’s corpse was loaded into a black Mercedes Benz SUV with license plate HV266-EkY. The Benz along with four other cars headed to the General Hospital, Ikeja morgue.
The body arrived at the General Hospital exactly 01:20 am and was left in the SUV for 40 minutes while preparations were made. At 02:07, the corpse was dislodged at the Lekan Ogunsola Memorial House of the Ikeja General Hospital.
Goldie, 31, until her demise was signed to Kennis Music label. She was known for her hit song ‘You know it (Gboko lowo e) ft eLDee; but it was her participation in the Big Brother All Star that turned her into a mega star, and a household name in Africa. While she lived, she received a total of 10 awards, including Exquisite Lady of the year, Best Female Artiste award and City People Best Female Artiste of the year.
She has also been inducted as a Federal Celebrity Special Marshal, alongside other notable Nigerian Celebrities.
The Law Students Society of the Obafemi Awolowo University recently issued her an Award for Musical Excellence under the category of Best Female Artiste of the Year. She was also conferred a United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace by the Federal Government. Goldie became the final celebrity to exit the BBA7 star game house in 2012 as the 3rd runner up, after her controversial romance with Kenyan rapper, Prezzo.
