The Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi yesterday disclosed that the new Port Harcourt Sports City with 38,000 capacity Olympic stadium may be ready for use in the next six months.
The Governor dropped the hint while conveying the National Good Governance Tour, NGGT team round major projects of his administration in the state.
He said that the Olympic stadium, when completed with the entire Sports City estimated to cost about N34 billion will be capable of holding any international sports events of Olympic magnitude and that the new city tagged The Greater Port Harcourt City will stretched to the new sea port also under construction to actualize his administration’s dream of a new Port Harcourt city.
According to the governor, the whole idea of developing the area is not only geared towards transforming the state but to explore the raw talents in the youth to enable them channel their energy and skills into sports in a manner that they can compete with their peers anywhere in the world.
The governor also said that the world class sport city covering over 2,500 hectares of land will have five thousand public toilets, four swimming pools, javelin court, high jump court, volley ball and lawn tennis courts.
Other components include: long jump court, boxing ring, wrestling court, football pitches among others.
To accommodate every class of people in the new PH City, Governor Amechi said plan had been concluded to build a 2, 000 housing units for the poor in the next three months with every facility and infrastructure provided, including water, lighting, which will be supplied by the administrator.
“In the new PH City, 2,000 houses will be build for the poor and all facilities provided, including water and light. Nobody will be allowed to mount overhead tank or use generator as everything needed will be supplied by the administrator,” he said.
