LASG opens relief camp for fire victims

Lagos – The Lagos State Emergency management Agency (LASEMA) has opened a relief camp for victims of the recent fire incident in Ebute Meta area of Lagos, an official said. The General Manager of LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, told reporters on Saturday that 1,005 persons had entered the camp opened in compliance with the directive of Gov Babatunde Fashola.

Fashola had on Thursday given the directive after visiting Oko Oba in Ebute Meta, where fire gutted some sawmills and residential buildings. Oke-Osanyintolu said that shortly after the governor declared the camp opened, officials of LASEMA began to move in people displaced by the fire.

“On day one, 1,005 enumerated as Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) were immediately moved into the relief camp located at Ikosi/Ijerin Local Community Development Area. “The governor had directed LASEMA that the fire incident site should be cleared and levelled while the camp should be opened immediately to accommodate the affected persons.

“The people displaced have been offered accommodation at the camp, which they accepted and moved in immediately. “There are little challenges at the camp, which the state government is addressing,’’ he said. He said that more victims were still coming into the camp as the exercise was continuous . The Oko-Oba fire incident occurred on Jan. 8, leading to the destruction of shops, houses and property. (NAN)
