Afenifere berates Sanusi over call for ban of ethno-religious organisations

LAGOS — A pan- Yoruba organisation, Afenifere Renewal Group  ARG, has berated Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi over his recent call for the banning of religous and ethnic organisations.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kunle Famoriyo, the group advised the CBN governor to focus his attention on effective management of the country’s irreverent and depreciating naira rather than dabbling into politics.

While calling on the CBN governor to explain what informed his decision to make such calls, the group said  “the control and administration of the monetary and financial sector and policies of the Federal Government rest with the CBN under his watch.

“It is in the light of this that ARG asked the CBN Governor, Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to focus his attention on the effective management of the country’s irreverent and depreciating naira, inflation rate that currently stands at 12.3 per cent, and a lending rate at 12 per cent MPR (in comparison to Kenya, seven per cent; Burkina Faso, 4.2 per cent and South Africa five per cent.

Continuing, the statement included: “Rwanda, seven per cent; Egypt 9.5 per cent; Central African Republic, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea at 5.8 per cent, among others.
