NITMA 2012: NCS encourages healthy competition, spurs innovation

By the time the just concluded National Information Technology Merit Award, (NITMA) was drawing to a close, it became obvious among IT practitioners that the organizers of the event, the Nigerian Computer Society, (NCS) has encouraged encouraged healthy competition while spurring innovation and creativity within the IT community nationwide.

Also known as the President’s Award, NCS members voted online for their choice for Information Technology’s most prestigious award. Accenture, acknowledged for its world class auditing services, confirmed the transparency and credibility of the entire voting process for the IT personality of the year award.

At the award ceremony that honored many individuals including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, Senator Liyel Imoke, Governor of Cross River State and Mr. Jim Ovia, founder of Zenith Bank PLC, who has all contributed immensely to the growth of IT in Nigeria, NCS highlighted the importance of recognizing and celebrating individuals and organizations that have contributed tremendously towards the development and deployment of Information Technology in Nigeria.

The individuals by their contributions and achievements had sent out powerful and undeniable message that top achievers in the IT industry were the positive change agents moving Nigeria forward.

Being the most prestigious and recognized award ceremony that annually attracts top stakeholders and key decision makers of Nigeria IT community in the private and public sectors, the NCS has celebrated particular individuals and organizations that have been joining hands with them to promote and appreciate excellence in IT, as the nation celebrates and honours the brightest and best of Nigerias IT community.

Earlier in his address, the NCS President, Sir. Demola Aladekomo told the gathering that award was in line with the association?s strategy of celebrating heroes in the sector to stimulate outstanding

performances that would drive real, inclusive development and transformation in Nigeria through IT.

NCS, he was committed to celebrating talent and promoting the excellence, leadership, vision, and commitment of individuals and organizations within the IT industry and community.

Fellowships, honorary and professional:

At the event, deserving individuals who have distinguished themselves with exceptional achievement and service that has accelerated IT development in Nigeria, were honored by NCS with honorary fellowships.

Accordingly, IT professionals who have excelled and have made significant impact through their work in IT were also honoured with professional fellowship grade of the Society.

Professional fellowships were conferred on ten new fellows which included EVC, NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah.

After a transparent voting, Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor, Country Manager, Google Nigeria won the “2012 Information Technology Personality of Year” (the most outstanding IT contributor for 2012).

Meanwhile, Chief Donatus ‘Don’ Etiebet was conferred with the award of “Best Software Entrepreneur of the Year 2012” by the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON) even as the Federal University of Technology, Minna also won the ISPON National Software award for Tertiary Institutions.

Also speaking the event, the Governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola while accepting to host 2013 NCS conference commended NCS for its developmental role in IT and for organizing such an inspiring event.

He outlined innovative technology based initiatives of the Osun state government, inviting NCS and other IT stakeholders to partner.

Aregbesola, stated enthusiastically that his government is focused on making Osun state the IT hub of Nigeria.

“The government and wonderful people of Osun State look forward to hosting NCS members and other delegates/resource persons to the 2013 NCS International Conference and AGM in Oshogbo”, he said.

The EVC, NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah while responding on behalf of all awardees, thanked NCS for the recognition and honour.

He promised that awardees would keep engaging with NCS, participating fully in NCS activities and supporting NCS to accelerate IT development in Nigeria.
