Hypertensive patients warned against beer consumption

Osogbo -  An Osogbo-based medical practitioner, Dr Kazeem Adebare,  has warned that hypertensive patients who consumed beer risk liver damage and heart disease.

Adebare, on Friday in Osogbo, said beer contained alcohol and heavy drinking could raise blood pressure.

The medical practitioner, who explained that high blood pressure was one of the leading causes of kidney failure, appealed to hypertensive patients to stop taking alcohol.

According to him, high blood pressure forces heart to work harder and it did not only wear the heart but damaged the blood vessels.

Adebare, cautioned people that alcohol consumption was a cause of blood pressure elevation and advised patients to desist from heavy drinking in the interest of their health.

The medical practitioner argued that hypertension patients who reduced alcohol consumption were indirectly lowering their blood pressure to enable them live long.

Another medical practitioner, Mrs Beatrice Olayemi,said that anybody who had high blood pressure should stop taking beer or risk death.

Olayemi argued that the long held belief that consumption of alcohol had certain health benefits should no longer be encouraged. (NAN)
