Though boxing is progressing at the National Stadium Gymnasium in Lagos, it may not be bare of the controversies and intrigues that surround the sport. One of such center on equipments. Head of technical of Nigeria Boxing Federation, T.J Adams was reported to have brought the issue of fake gloves and head gear to the attention of the MOC which promised to do something about it.
Olympian Jerry Okorodudu has pointed out there could be lots of injuries to head and brain of boxers, owing to what he termed “ low standard equipment” in use at the festival.
“As a boxer and trainer, I have never seen such low standard equipment. I think these are substandard to specifications by world amateur boxing ruling body, AIBA.” Investigations at the boxing venue showed the SR BOXING gloves in use.
“The head gear is not made for amateur boxing. These head gears are made for training, not for ring competition. But since they are continuing with these, my belief is, there will be injuries,” he said. Officials also expressed disappointed at the poor lighting in the new-Gymnasium, venue for the sport, saying it makes for the lowest standard visibility for competition. The hall is so dark and makes it very hard for officials scoring fights as boxers also complained about poor visibility.
